In Dominican Republic my ancetors what they usally use to eat was like common fish and bread and other types of food i never have really eaten before. Also a common food they eat is mangu con salmi y huevo. For example this is the common food they eat out there in my country.
Now i really dont eat y common food. I mostly eat American food like hamburgers cookies and like Burger king. All the foods are what some of us eat now instead of our food in our mordern country.
For me i dont believe America dont have a common traditonal food because they eat all kinds of food healthy or junk food. If u go to an restaruant u will choose all differfoods because we all have different types of food that dont rely on one tradition. So that there shows all types of different foods that are from america and dont rely on tradition
My Ancestors
My ancestors foods are still eaten today . One of the popular food in Ivory coast that we known for is "Attieke". Attieke is one of our popular food that's now eaten in almost everywhere (other continents of Africa). Today Attieke's eaten for like more than 3 or 4 times a day.
Attieke's popularity eaten with Garba (a sour fish that come from somewhere around Europe). In my country insted of saying "sour fish with Attieke",we say "Garba" Because, of the way its made.To be more specific it's: Attieke with fresh green pepper, oil on it,salt and sour fish aside. (yum)

Second food that my ancestors have eaten was plantain "Foufou" with hot peper soup. Foufou is plaitain dough mixed with red oil. It's eaten with different kind of sauce but i like it with hot peper sauce and with fish aside.
Another food that my ancestors have eaten and is still popular this day's "Aloco with fish" (fried plaitain) and "Plaitain chips" (fried hard-plaitain ).
Did you know that gas and oil contain corn in it!? Well i just found out today. When i found out i was really shocked/surprised and i did not believe it but then i read more about it and realized it was actually true!
Corn ethanol is ethanol produced from corn that is used as a biomass. Corn ethanol is produced by means of and the action of p the anaerobic pathway carried out by yeasts in which simple sugars are converted to is ethanol and carbon dioxide.purifying a liquid by a process of heating and cooling. Corn ethanol is mainly used as an oxygenate in gasoline to produce a low-level blend. To a lesser extent, it is used as fuel for E85 flex-fuel vehicles. Corn is the main feedstock used for producing ethanol fuel in the United States.

Dr. Akther : What was Pollan's purpose for introducing Steer 534?
The purpose for introducing Steer 534 was to inform us about the cows and the process it been though or going though to become a taste patty. The text states, "Their business is the stage in the production of a hamburger....Steer number 534 spent his first six months in these pastures alongside his mother, a cow named 9534." This shows that the author is informing us about the cows and the process it been though or going though to become a taste patty.Dr. Diaz: What was Pollans purpose for introuducing Steer 534?
I think that the purpose for introducing Steer 534 was to inform us about the cows background. The text states, "Steer number 534 spent his first six months in these pastures alongside his mother..." This shows that the author is informing us about the cows background. Also the text states," Born on March 13,2001/ adding his diet of mothers milk..." This also shows that its informing the reader.
Steer 534 by Hamed drame
Steer 534 is a introduction of what pollon thinks about the cows. The purpose of this is that the cows should not eat the corn they should eat grass. When a cow eats grass, it doesn't kill the plant. Grasses have evolved so that they can survive being eaten very well.(as long as the cows give them a chance to recover.)
D.r Poole
I eat burgers and burgers contain corn.I didn't know that burgers had corn as an ingrediant.Inside
of the patty is where the corn is at.After doing research I found out that burger patties contain corn as an ingrediant. The crazy part about this is that I love to eat burgers and in reading the book The Omnivore's Dilemma I found out that a farmer named George Naylor has a farm and the farm is not the ordinary farm I would think about. He makes cows eat corn which they arent suppoosed to eat and then the meat we eat comes from the cow manure.I think our corn comes from parts of the cow manure and we actually get fed and eat this stuff!I would of never thought that stuff that we digest could come from something that discusting.
My ancentors used to a lot of weird things because of there heritage. Back in their day Spanish, Cubans, Puerto Ricans would eat a "Blood sausage" now a days its still around but not as common.
Now my family eats stuff like "pernil el horno" and "onion stake" we rather eat that than a blood sausage. We havent completely lost our heritage cause we still eat beans, rice and chicken. So as a whole i dont think we lost it.
As a primarily Latino male I think American food heritage are not strong at all. For the most part its "grilled food" like hot dogs and hamburgers. Its the same old thing. All you got to do is go to a fast food resturant and get a hamburger. And there located everywhere. So American heritage coming to food is not very strong.
Altough others will say its not that bad at all. I can see why because its so cheap. You can go to any fast food place and get what you when coming to burgers. As for Latino food its harder to get when not in N.Y and its more expensive. So American food can be better in a sense to price.

food traditions by hamed drame
Modern Americans have strong food traditions. i have many reasons why because people have traditions for many reasons. some modern americans dont have strong tradition. my family have a strong tradition because it worship god. all we do is dont eat until 8:00 or 8:30. then we go to a place to eat a lot of food and tommrrow we do the same thing for a month. this tradition is called ramadan. heres a pic of what we eat.
other people think modern americans dont have strong food traditions. but they have no reason to say it. i have a reson why i say they have strong traditions they may not have food traditions but still have strong traditions. in africa and Asia, 80 percent of the population still uses traditional remedies rather than modern medicine for primary healthcare. but still have good food.

In My Family I Mostly Eat Rice, Gandules, And Chicken For Dinner.I Sometimes Eat Tostones Con Salami For Lunch. Finally For Breakfast I Eat Farina, Pancakes, Or Cereal.

Dr.Diaz: Based on chapter 3, what are some unintended output (consequences) from the industrial food train?
Based on chapter 3, some unintended output from the industrial food train is that its causes global warming, which has a negative affect. The text states," But what happens to the eighty pounds of man-made nitrogen that Naylor's corn plants don't take up? Some/ evaporates/ creates acid rain. Some/ nitrous oxide/ increases global warming." This shows that because off the food train its not only affecting the farm but the environment. Also the text states," That's around seventy-five gallons of oil per acre of corn( some estimates are much higher)" This shows that these corn has more fuel and gas then the food.
.
.
Dr.Agurcia
Some intended consequences in chapter 3 is that many farmers refuse to grow gmos .As mention in the text " But many farmers like George Naylor refuse to grow GMOS crops. They believe that gmos are a reckless experiment with the natural order of things". This shows how some farmers refuses to grow gmo crops because they believe that gmo can be harmful to other crops . As stated in the text "They might come from a bacteria or some other organism".This is another reason why farmers would want gmos planted in their field because is has so many chemicals that can really damage your field . Farmers actually planted more but faced some difficulties but still managed to sell seeds from seed companies.
Dr. Dominican: Traditional Foods
Traditional foods in my family would be mangu, tostones, mofongo, platano maduro, sancocho and pollo. My family eats alot of plaintains in many foods. As time goes by its still the same yet not as much. In some families not all traditional foods stay the same.
Foods that my family eats now hasn't really changed yet now we mainly eats arroz con habichuela y carne. Also my family and me now eat less of traditional foods and junk food. I believe that my family don't really go by tradition anymore at least not as much as before.
there's fast food restaurants like McDonald's, Burger King, and Checkers etc. i don't think its traditional because i know that fast foods will and would never actually be a traditional food.
Some people may disagree that Americans still have good food traditions, because what they personally eat and because thanks giving that's a traditional holiday when you actually eat traditional foods. I don't think Americans follow there food traditions because i know that fast food restaurants are not traditional foods.
Dr.Blake:Did society have different perspectives of the changes of food
Today's society has a lot of difference in it but now there are more types of food. Such as cheese burgers. A diffetent type of my family have eaten burgers too. also the hamburger is a sandwich conisting of one or more cooked patties of ground meat mostly beef with sliced buns. My ansetors have enjoyed burgers while sitting with family. todays society eats it too but they have not noticed what triditions were shared with the burger.
Do you agree with michael pollan that todays society have lost tridition?
I agree with the idea that michael pollan stated because todays society have not only lost interenst in tradition they have not thought of the meaning of having food that their ancestos have used in tradition for family.
My family is puerto rican and there are more foods that have ate. one of the most traditional dish in puerto rico is rice with avacado, spam and peas. This is one of the foods that my ancestors ate and now me and my family still eat it.
Dr.Mckennon
In special occasions like christmas , thanksgiving , new years and etc, my family and i love to eat curry chicken. You can eat it with white rice, plaintains, dumplings , and more. It is special to my family because its something that I dont eat daily and it is important to my culture.
I eat alot of fast food . For example i eat dominos , chinese food, pop eyes , corner store and etc. When i go home i will usually eat cereal. For breakfast i eat waffles or pankcakes with eggs on the side. For lunch i eat sandwhich with turkey and cheese on it . For dinner i eat anything like jamican food such as , jerk chicken with rice. Beverages i drink is gingereal , arizona , and ice tea . These are the type of foods and drinks i eat and drink at home.
Modern Americans did not lose any food traditions because alot of different species stick to their cultured foods.Alot of cultures love their own tytpe of food and where it comes from. They believe in there traditions so therefor i disagree with Michael Pollan because food traditions are still being sticked to their own cultrures.
Some people may disagree with me because they believe modern Americans did lose many food traditions but otherwise on my side I disagree with them because I still see many cultures sticking to their traditional foods.
Dr.caba
People say that the tradition is changing over time and I agree about that because the food is very different.
I'm Dominican so my grandparents eats Spanish foods, so they like to giver Spanish food, they always eat rice and beans with chicken, sometimes they eat Tostones or platains with cheese and with some salami. For breakfast they love to eat mangu, it's every bodies favorite Dominican food. There are many things like food tipico, It has to do with some fresh fruits and some foods, they eat salads, and some of the salads are originally from my Dominican Republic.
I'm different though I usally start my day of wit a bowl of cereal, or something with pancakes most of the times wit a nice healthy sandwich. Many of the times I eat mangu it's really healthy, once a month my family eats other country's food like tacos, we have a noght on the weekends when family members come over and we eat, like some rice with fish or something else.
I can understand why a lot of people state that food has changed over time. Many people change the way they eat wen they get to a new country, but that can happen with anyone. Lots of people travel and eat other peoples foods, and get on a habit of eating those type of foods.
In conclusion I like the way that I eat everything toe taste good, but most of the time I like to go to restrants and eat things that isn't usually cooked at my house.

A few weeks ago, I made the point that even though we may not have access to our paleolithic ancestors’ (yes, all of them) food journals, and even though there were many different paleolithic diets depending on climate, latitude, topography and other environmental contexts, the ancestral eating paradigm remains viable, helpful, and relevant to contemporary interests. That almost goes without saying, right? It’s kind of why we’re all here, reading this and other blogs, and asking the butcher for pork chops and beef with straight faces. This stuff work.
What I eat in these days are many foods with flavor and taste. If you love Dominican cuisine, married a Dominican or just crave the food of the Caribbean, this site will be a lifesaver! A collaborative effort between Clara and Ilana, this website is jam-packed with traditional and nontraditional Dominican recipes. For example, Berenjenas guisadas con cerdo (braised pork and eggplants), a traditional dish eaten in Dominican Republic and served with a side of white rice and fresh avocados, make for a great dish!
I disagree with Michael Pollan and I know modern people eat better than our ancestors ate before in history. My opinion is modern people eat better now than before. I say that Michael Pollan is wrong and he should know that by now.....

Dr.Agurcia : Oreos have corn ?
I eat Oreos everyday and still haven't realized it have corn syrup . I might enjoy eating it but i don't look what ingredients oreos might have . I'm surprised oreos have corn syrup if you cant taste it , why cant we ? The industrial food chain shows the different type of corn that affects different food in different ways. Oreos has sugar , corn syrup , oil , wheat flower , and etc. I couldn't imagine how much corn syrup is in oreos and how it going to react to my body . I'm looking forward to know more about corn and how different corn reacts to different type of food .
Today I'm going to talk about food that have corn in it. But most of the time junk food has corn in it like Doritos. Corn is a domesticated plant of the Americas. Along with many other indigenous plants like beans, squash, melons, tobacco, and roots such as Jerusalem artichoke, European colonists in America quickly adopted maize agriculture from Native Americans. This is the history of corn. Here is a pic of example of food that have corn in it.
Corn in Marshmallows??!!
For today I had went to my kitchen and decided to chose Marshmallows. I know what your thinking, How could Marshmallows have corn syrup in them? I am shocked myself . From what I learned today I could barely think of the Industrial food chain, and the processes of turning the corn in to corn syrup. Since Marshmallows come from corn syrup, who knows what other chemicals are in these marshmallows! I love marshmallows and I would like to do more further research on marshmallows to find out what other unknown ingredients are in marshmallows!
Corn in Dr. Pepper?
Really?
Every day I drink Dr. Pepper and corn is in it? I think about the industrial food chain and how corn made it from a field like George Naylor's to my lunchtime can of Dr. Pepper. I imagine that certian farms grow corn specifically for factories that turn it into corn syrup, and from there it gets shipped out to factories specializing in specific products. Since the corn from Dr. Pepper comes from corn syrup, I can only imagine that it made on an industrial farm with chemicals (I mean, Dr. Pepper, basically is like a type of chemical as is!). I would be interested to know/ research what the unintened outputs are of Dr. Pepper.

Dr. Akther :Traditional Food
The staples of Bangladeshi cuisine are rice, which is common component of most everyday meals. One of my favorite cuisine is Biryani. The food that I eat now is the same.
I say that Modern Americans don't have a strong food tradition because people now add new ingredients to make the cuisine taste better and look better. For example, pizza, back then there wasn't many pizza topping or sauces. But now there is an endless variety of pizza topping and sauces to choose from ( pepperonis, anchovies, pineapples, spinach, etc.)
In the other hand, people many say the Modern Americans do have a strong food tradition because people haven't change pizza totally.

Today's society I believe doesn't stick to their food traditions, but some do follow so I'm neutral about this. My religion is Christian and our food tradition is we always cook for a special occasion.
So my family has held a food tradition that we always cook something for a special tradition, such as a birthday. Throughout hundreds of generations the Christians holiday has carried many traditions... Cooking special holiday foods (sharefaith.com). This shows how Christians do have food traditions and my family does follow and worship this. Yet it's fasinating to learn the history behind some traditions that are so fondly and fervently embraced (Sharefaith.com). This shows how it's amazing and great to embrace and learn about our traditions but people decide not to.
Today's society (most of it) doesn't stick to their religion/traditions. People would usually not follow it or forget about it. Japan... Meal for the holiday is KFC....So successful that it became a Christmas tradition (readersdigest.com) this states how there's many food traditions all around the world and people do follow we these in honor of there religion or whatever they worship. When holidays come around, the French go with what they love, oysters and foie grass (readersdigest.com). This shows how also in different parts of the world people do celebrate and embrace there culture.
In conclusion, people sometimes stay true to there religion/tradition but some people don't and they forget about it. I believe everyone should stay true to there religion because that's who they are and what they represent as a whole.

Dr.Agurcia : Did Modern Americans worry about their Body System ?
Corn Tortillas |
Flower Tortilla |
Traditions :
In December 1980 my ancestors were forced to leave El Salvador because of violence such as rape , murderers ,and violent police officers. Violence led to the Civil War and separated into 4 countries, which were Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Honduras. My ancestors was send to Honduras. Before they left they took all there food such as corn tortillas, rice, beans, flower tortillas, cheese and etc. For any holiday our tradition of food will be mostly flower tortillas since you can eat anything with. You can make a burrito ,add meat, vegetables and more.Corn tortillas can be eaten as ,enchiladas ,tacos, chips and more. My ancestors made both tortillas hand made. Since they were poor they would only make it during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, left overs will be eaten as their breakfast. Even though they were poor they appreciated that they has something to eat even if they got tired of eating the same food over and over again.

Does Michael Pollan believe that Modern Americans lost their food tradition ?
Modern Americans haven't lost their food traditions . I do believe every one have their own traditions and their own beliefs but isn't force to follow those beliefs/traditions .I do disagree with Michael Pollan opinion that Modern Americans lost their food tradition because even though they might not celebrate a special occasion with food , it doesn't mean that Modern Americans have to eat it at that specific date. We all have different eating habits however , some might celebrate their tradition on a regular day basic. For example my mom makes corn tortillas on a regular days basic, even though it's not a special occasion. Serve the kind of food you know the story behind.
Although people may disagree with me , sometimes its good to have food traditions to gather family but don't know whats inside the food . I think that what worry people about whats actually inside the food if there gaining weight , does it have chemicals, how many calories is in that specific dish ? Also some people may not have traditions because they usually think about how food going to affect their body system so they usually stick with food that going to help their body system instead of hurting it. Americans stay eating healthy food , but aren't they tired of eating the same food over and over again ? Are they really ready to try something new ?

Roti sort of looks like Mexican tortillas but its not. |
Unlike others people might think that the Modern American its really good but its not bad. To some people these American foods are very addictive which could cause diabetes. But people don't really think about what they eat. To be honest most people don't read the back of a food box to see the facts on the type food.

Dr. Poole
The food traditions of my ancestors were Christmas and Thanksgiving. They ate corn, beans, and squash. On Thanksgiving they also ate potatoes, grapes, and apples. Pilgrims ate these certain Thanksgiving foods. These are my ancestors traditions and what they were used to eating. They ate turkey as well.
The types of foods I eat consists of many things like Chinese food, fruits, vegetables, spanish food, and seafood. I start my day off with some cereal or a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. Then for lunch I eat many different things like a sandwich, or some pizza and I always have to have a beverage like for example a Arizona fruit punch juice. Finally for dinner I have some basic foods like chicken, rice, steak or take out food. I eat take out foods such as Mc Donald's, Burger king, Subway, and KFC.
In my opinion i don't think modern Americans have strong food traditions because the only real food celebrations and traditions we have are Christmas and Thanksgiving. Christmas I barely consider a food tradition because in this modern time we usually just open up presents and show our love to our loved ones. Then we just carry on with our regular eating ways. Thanksgiving is the only real tradition where modern Americans eat different and some of the same foods as our ancestors that goes back to old Native American traditions. This is why I don't think modern Americans have strong food traditions.

Dr. Ades: Does the Olive Branch Extend to Today? An examination on the food habits of my culture from the past to the present
The Past: Aleppo, Syria
My ancestors initially came from Spain and were forced to leave to Syria during the Spanish Inquisition. My ancestors took a lot of the food from Spain to Syria such as olives, nuts, as well as olive oil. When they moved to Syria they would make their own bread (the pita type of Syrian bread pictured on the right). They would also make their own hummus (bottom left) and baba-ganoush (above), make from chick peas and eggplants.People would generally have their own small farms with lambs and chickens. They would use a lot of lentils because they were easy to store year round as well as rice and beans. My ancestors would spice many things with local fruits such as dates and apricots since they grew in the wild. Their would always be a bowl of pistaccio nuts and almonds since nut trees grew in the area as well as olives at every meal. My ancestors lived in Aleppo, an inland city in Syria, but I imagine that people who lived on the coast ate fish as well.
Today: New York City, United States
Today, I eat an assortment of foods from many different cultures such as Thai, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and Italian as well as fruits and vegetables. I often start my day with a granola bar and coffee, and have a lunch I can eat up easily in the microwave. When I have time to cook, I often make stir-fries, fish, or meat. I definitely don't eat food that grow in the region like my ancestors in Syria did. I don't even know how I would begin to eat the food that naturally grows in the New York City region or if that is even possible. Is Michael Pollan Right? Have Modern Americans Lost Their Food Traditions?
I don't know about everybody, but I definitely have! I also tend to agree with Michael Pollan's claim that Modern American's don't have strong food traditions. I think about what my ancestors use to eat, and it was all based on what was readily available to them based on what the land could support and what could grow naturally. It's strange to think that in the past, even people who lived in cities had livestock and small gardens to support their eating habits. This connection between what our land can support and what we eat seems to be completely missing from modern American food culture. Are All Americans Hopeless?
Although some people may say it is possible for some Americans to eat locally or eat the foods of their cultures, I believe this does not extend to a significant population of the American people. So much of American culture is fast-paced, and really thinking about what we put into our bodies takes time, thought, and money. Often, if I don't pack ahead a lunch from work, there aren't that many options about what I can eat outside of the local deli. I'm looking forward to learning about how I can change the way I eat in small ways as we examine American food habits throughout this unit.Friday, February 13, 2015
